Youth and adults with disabilities have some of the highest levels of unemployment and poverty in America. The Social Security Administration reports that many young people with disabilities who enter their rolls are likely to remain on the programs for the rest of their lives. Youth and their families need information and tools to become self-sufficient, productive participants in their communities. The federal benefit system is complex and families are often fearful of losing the benefits they have. However, well-educated families can make better decisions that can promote their family member working in the community. This session will assist family members and self advocates to become knowledgeable on Social Security and health insurance benefits; the impact of working on benefits; and work incentives available in order to make well-informed decisions about their student working in a community-based competitive-wage job after graduation.
