This workshop gives an experienced look at the transition process after high school. What are the options for special needs students after high school? What does independence mean? How is it determined, assessed and measured? How can families maximize the high school years to prepare for transition? How can the IEP process support a good next step? We will discuss the difference in settings between high school and the transition. We also will explore what to look for in the “program/student” match. What program components and qualities are distinctive benchmarks to a positive experience? What should students and their families look for before, during and after they make a campus visit? Special needs areas to be addressed include autism, cognitive/intellectual disabilities and social disabilities including high functioning autism, PDD-NOS, and Asperger Syndrome.
